If a user wants to have a heavy machine gun indoors it would look much like the Aliens II machine guns.* Think, Dual cycler in lockdown mode rof. Now before anyone flips out, this would have a heavy "cert" cost and come with some limitations.
Speed.* Your running speed when you equip the weapon is like that of a Max.* The equip speed is 3 seconds.* The biggest limitation is overheating.* You have a bar on the bottom.* It reaches red the gun powers down for 5 seconds.* In full on auto you have 10 seconds before it reaches overheat.* Given that the ttk is in the realm of 1.2 seconds for the average trooper, you can do alot of damage.* But if you get caught in the open, even with its tight cof you are toast due to speed penalties.

Aliens (the second movie) or Aliens 2?
Do you mean the hip mounted smart-guns? The deployable mini-turret things? A minigun proper?
Would it have to reload? Belt fed? How much ammo does it carry? 10 seconds of sustained fire, and a small CoF all for the low low price of speed and a 5 second vulnerability?
Perhaps if it were a 5 second warmup instead, but a 5 second cooldown will just lead to people spawning, grabbing the mower, and killing everything in the 10 seconds. Anything left over might kill them during cooldown, but then they'll just respawn and repeat.

Hip mounted guns.
Reload, equivilent to a locked down DC. Total ammo is variable to how much a user wants to put in his ammo satchel.
Hmm. Perhaps a 3 second warm up, but while warming up you can fire like a unlocked DC. Three seconds in any FPS is literally a lifetime. Most close or mid range encounters in PS last under a second to a whole whopping 5 seconds.
As far as mowing the tower, you would barely get past the first flight of stairs before your weapon overheated. Reduced speed and you dont have the armor of a Max. This is strictly a suppression weapon.

So... according to your first post, it would fire for 10 seconds before overheating.
According to the second, you would overheat before running up a flight of stairs.
I see people only ever using this weapon indoors, because outside they don't even get that current MAX style run, even though they move just as slow (or slower) than them normally.
A suppression weapon with a tight CoF is asking for trouble. (Just think of Maelstroms at the backdoor.)

I was playing with the numbers.... Just putting the idea out there for discussion and number mulling.
When not equiped the gun folds up on to the users back and they have no speed degradation. Once they activate they are slowed to a walk and the process of unfolding and ready to initially fire is 3 sec. When they fire it takes same time as DC to lock down (2? 3 Sec?) for the barrel's speed to get up to full DC mode. Once in that mode they have 5 to 10 sec before the gun overheats and it locks until it cools. Cooling could take anywhere from 3 to 6 sec. Reloading the magazine takes same time as a DC or perchance a mcg. Havent decided on weapon capacity before reload.
So you wind up with a weapon that once up to speed has a very fast ttk but the user needs support to advance and must constantly be aware of his weapon and watch his ammo.

So is this a lev3 cannon or a supression weapon? I'm having immense trouble trying to fit this weapon anywhere into a category.

I'll ask my question again, but I'll word it differently.
Where does this weapon fit into the game?
Is it a suppression weapon, like the DC but with less armour? Is it an MCG with a tight CoF and a warmup/cooldown?
Is it empire specific? How difficult to obtain is it (according to the skill levels we have already organized)?
It's good to come up with ideas, but they need to have a place in the plan that's already been set up.

Is there a specific Forum Thread that people can go to to see the planned structure of the game that has already been set up?

Intentionally, no.
For the most part you need to read through most of the backposts to get a "feel" for where we are going with game mechanics.
We are doing things this way in order to have our ideas open to the public, but not easily copied or pirated because of the amount of time required for "catchup".
Looks like you have some reading to do. :)
