Kyraal and I have been working this past week on getting a few concept art pieces together so we can begin some discussion on what each empire should look like.

I tossed the first one back... This one I like.* Kyraal also developed an emblem of sorts for the empire.

We haven't discussed the colors yet, so don't get all crazy.* Kyraal just filled in the blanks to give you some food for thought.

Comments appreciated.

I likey. Once the colours happen, the Robocop similarities will probably disappear.

Yeah, I'm never going to forgive Rob Bottin for designing Robocop the way he did--and that the big clumsy cyborg got as popular as he did :P There is pretty much no way escaping the Robocop-esque look if you want a helmet with a horizontal visor-slit, which I really wanted in this case. It's a good way to go, as it de-personalises (de-humanises?) the wearer nicely, and would fit a technocratic faction who, unlike e.g. their Mongol-inspired counterpart, most likely have supressed their emotions in favour of a logical outlook on life.

It certainly didn't help that I chose to go with rather fluid lines in the overall design, which (if you want a form-fitting helmet) invariably leads to a Robocop-shaped helmet. I could have gone with a more boxed approach, but that didn't -feel- like the Erudite Sodality. In the 1.1 iteration I did chose to adopt a vertical, crossing visor. I thought that would be enough to detract from the Robocop-look, but obviously I've been staring myself blind working on it.

Secant,

Here's the render I made of the logo, while working it out, which I submitted to Cogwhe-- um.. Cogburn :P. Got the thoughts around it included, as well. Comments on the logo, as well, is welcome. Remember nothing is set yet, regarding the logo, and while I usually prefer to design things around existing information, there might not be any harm doing the other way around--building fiction around the logo.

As for making a polymodel of the character at this stage. I don't doubt you could whip one up quickly, and it would look great :) but I'm not sure now is the time to actually start modeling, as the concept isn't set in stone. I should probably also send you the more detailed version of the helmet, before you start modeling, as well as a quick run-down of what he looks like from behind.

Perhaps.

But in these days of the Google Age, it's next to impossible to come up with a design which won't resemble something else to somebody. Can't say I'm bothered by it.

It's a one-spoked, 12-cogged cogwheel.

Edit: Or perhaps that's two spokes..

abathur
09-01-2005, 01:44 AM
Consider moving one of the spokes? (just to see how it looks, if it looks silly pretend I'm not here.)

Kyraal
09-01-2005, 02:14 AM
Damnit, the more I look at it now, the more it looks like a frigging Pokemon ball thingie. I'm going to kill you, Headshotter :P

abathur, yeah, or perhaps add a second pair of spokes, crossing the first. We need to break the Pokemonity somehow..

No, I'm dead serious. This game needs Pokemón. I've seen the light now.

;)

Edit: Enough goofing around for me for tonight. Will see if I can get 4 hours of sleep before having to get up.

Personally I prefer the first one, i.e. not too many spokes, but the diagonal spokes give it the suggestion of movement...

abathur
09-01-2005, 05:13 AM
I think I might prefer the lower left one, follwed by the upper left.

Kryaal can you inverse the interior colors on the bottom left one? I'll do it in PS tomorrow if you haven't by then (about to goto sleep), I think in my sleep addled brain that that might look kewl.

I actually liked the Original one the most. /shrug. :P

It looked really good as a model.

Kyraal
09-01-2005, 11:53 AM
Yeah, I wasn't too bothered by the original design, either. I'm still not. I only think about Pokemón if anyone mentions it for some reason.

Anyways, on to the opinion that there should be sleeves. I like short sleeves. I think it wouldn't be too much of an effort to make two versions of the textures. One with long sleeves, for the arctic maps, and one with short sleeves for the warmer climate ones. Would only be a matter of the space it occupies on the disk, as only one version will be loaded into the memory for each map.

Just made a quick mod to it, to see what it looks like with long sleeves:

http://www.davidostman.com/psalt/erudite_light_1_1_1.jpg

It -might- suit a high-tech faction better, to go with long sleeves.

Sleeves! Hooray! :)

I like it. It also sets a good standard...that the Sodality body armor has a sort of undersuit that the armored parts attach to. I'm using that concep with my rendition of the Vachir medium armor I'm scribbling on...a padded light environment suit that sits underneath the armored vest/boots/armguards and LBE. It seems like a good standardized model to go with for troops with interchangable armor.

I am so fucking impressed. Damnit here I've been all like "I need another MMOFPS. What is there Huxley? Twilight War? Nothing like Planetside?" But this game...I am so excited about. Looks like a freaking awesome game. I just hope it gets to be a popular game and maybe a company to support you with it.

Personally I'd keep the white colour, but I'm not sure how good it would work. Colours are currently giving me a headache, as no colour combination seems -right-.

Haha, love the codpiece.

Either the black under-armour needs to be navy, or an armour color needs to be dropped for it to not look silly (it may still look bad, but anyways.)

Last one looks cool. Has an NC look to it, but that is just me. I would ditch the gold for white or a really light grey. or a combo of grey and white. Design looks techy, typical colors of "energy" would be blue and white might look neat.

Here's a 3D version of the concept :)

http://members.cox.net/zekemass/versus/erudite.jpg* *http://members.cox.net/zekemass/versus/erudite-face.jpg

No textures or materials and at about double its polygon budget.* *::)
Polygons can easily be trimmed off if the model is to be used - right now, it's at a concept stage.
Maybe Caleel can texture it up! It needs bunnies ;)

Pipedream

lol

I know right now its a bit 80's with the tight pants and such...* * ;D

It'll be more manly when it's decked out with battle gear.* And the superman blue doesnt stay - it's just a color thats easy to see in a standard render.* *I imagine slightly battleworn armor will help fix that as well.* Texturing is key.

We'll have to hash out some game engine specifics before that model is ready to go much further.*
But it's a good start I think.

Wondering things like:

What type of shaders can be used
Normal-mapping?
Are helmets removable?*
Positions character will need to be animated to - run, sit, crouch, prone?* - this will affect how and where i remove polygons

And of course model critiques and changes.
